Episode 13 — REEF

• May 21st, 2018

Billy Joe Cain is back at it again. And this time, it is the finale. BJC was the first interview I conducted for the show and it was dynamic because he had a lot of personal experiences to share with me throughout his long relationship with games. I'm excited that I get to finally showcase the Radical Empathy Education Foundation, BJC's foray into virtual reality game development that serves a greater purpose. Trapped: A VR Detective Story is a great implementation of the noir genre that puts players in the thick of the mystery in case that involves the realities of the world of human trafficking and how it is right under our noses.

You can read more about BJC and Trapped on today's shownotes on kakebytes.com.

Episode 11 — King of (the long) Kon

• April 15th, 2018

Twin Galaxies has flexed the almighty ban hammer against cheating for the second time in just a few months and this time it's against the self-proclaimed video game player of the century: Billy Mitchell. I have had the great fortune of having Scott as a friend of mine and he has been able to bring his wisdom on the the show a few times already, but this time he came to speak about his time at Twin Galaxies, working as a referee and also in his capacity as a historian helping rebuild the database. He chatted with me about the experiences he had in working with Billy before and after working for Twin Galaxies, and after in his time working in the gaming industry as a journalist, an advocate, and historian.

Episode 8 — Do video games cause violence?

• March 13th, 2018

I think most of us know the answer to that question, but for this week's episode I brought back  Patrick Scott Patterson to talk about the "why." The correlation between violence in society and violence in video games has been a pervasive argument that has been a sideline to national tragedies for decades — most recently with the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Scott joined me on the inaugural episode of KakeBytes to talk about the importance of preservation with regards to video game history and I was more than happy to bring him back this week to talk to him about his history with video game advocacy.
